Tumorous cigarettes – and the rest of the year in shockvertising

What's bulbous, comically gruesome, and worth around £2.7m? The answer is not, in fact, Boris Johnson, but the government's new anti-smoking campaign, unveiled last Friday. The "hard hitting" initiative is the first graphic anti-smoking government campaign to run in the UK since images of fat-dripping cigarettes made the nation feel uneasily queasy in 2004. After an eight-year hiatus from grimagery you'd think the Department of Health bods might now have something really quite sickening up their sleeves. So what is it? Well, explains the chief medical officer, Prof Dame Sally Davies: "People will see a man smoking and then a cancer growing out of the cigarette." Um, excuse me while I am grossly underwhelmed. If Davies really thinks a CGI tumour is shocking then I hope to God she never looks at 4chan. In a world where you can watch execution videos on YouTube and torture-porn is a mainstream movie genre, it's getting increasingly difficult to shock people. And so, apart from a few of the usual suspects such as Peta, shock tactics have fallen somewhat out of favour as in advertising. As one New York Times critic yawned: "There's something hopelessly middle class about shock." But, let's face it, hopelessly middle class is what Guardian contributors do best. So here's a brief rundown of the year in shockvertising. The inevitable Photoshock fail While cigarettes lead to mutations, sugary drinks lead to amputations. At least that's according to the logic of a recent New York health department campaign about the perils of sugary soda. Illustrated with an image of an obese amputee, the blunt messaging was that binge fizzy-drinking will leave you legless. As it transpired, however, the man in the ad hadn't lost a limb to a Dr Pepper habit that had resulted in crippling type 2 diabetes. Rather, he'd lost it to Photoshop. When this was vociferously pointed out shock fizzled into sham and the campaign lost all credibility. The moral of this sad story is that the New York health department should probably hire a better ad agency. Another awful thing from People for the Erotic Treatment of Asparagus

E-cigarettes: no smoke without ire

I've long been a decorative smoker. One daily roll-up hasn't imperilled my health much, and it's rescued me from the ranks of the self-righteous. I've relished the dash of badness, but my indulgence has come at a price: complicity. My more heavily addicted husband has smoked from the age of 19. So long as I join him in the odd postprandial drag, I'm a bad influence. Last month I switched to an e-cig. I'm a convert. Sleek, black, and easily confused with a fine-point felt-tip, this newfangled "nicotine delivery system" is dead cool. The gently warm vapour ingeniously replicates the reflective pause of a real fag, the same quiet little buzz. But it doesn't stink up your breath, cover surfaces with ash, turn the air acrid, stain your fingers, brown your teeth, reduce bone mass of the jaw, promote gum disease, or – wait for the drum roll – cause cancer. Nor does an e-cig give anyone in your vicinity cancer. Why, then, are so many nonsmokers queasy, nay denunciatory, about electronic fags?

Flavored Cigar Sales Strong

Despite a demand from adult consumers, tobacco retailers are continually forced to defend their right to sell flavored cigars responsibly. While tobacco has long been a bread-and-butter product for convenience stores, accounting for millions in individual unit sales and boosting the profits from the average smoker’s market basket, it remains a category under attack at the federal and state levels. Consistent tax increases and society’s dim view of smoking, which has resulted in a spate of anti-tobacco legislation, have hurt overall sales and profits. These efforts have also caused c-stores lose regular adult consumers that enjoy discount Cafe Creme cigars To keep tobacco sales strong and steady, retailers have turned to flavored cigars, which have seen a spike in demand since federal regulations outlawed flavored cigarettes. But even here storm clouds are gathering, warned Thomas Briant, executive director of the National Association of Tobacco Outlets (NATO) in Minneapolis.

Lawmakers Targeting Electronic Cigarettes

As their popularity soars in convenience stores, e-cigs are becoming the target of new smoking bans and tax regulations. By Erin Rigik, Associate Editor. Once speculated to be a passing fad, e-cigarettes are increasing in sales and popularity and pushing their way toward becoming a mainstream product. Celebrities from Leonardo DiCaprio to Britney Spears have been spotted “vaping,” attracting further public attention to the e-cig trend. As the trend takes hold, government regulators at both the local and federal levels are lying in the weeds waiting to pounce on the good times.

What you need to know about e-cigarettes

As tobacco use continues its inexorable fall from grace, a growing number of people are turning to electronic cigarettes. These nifty electrical inhalers are being seen — and sometimes even marketed — as a "healthier" alternative to smoking tobacco. But are they really a viable alternative to cigarettes, or just a passing fad? What is it like to smoke one? And are they really safer than conventional cigarettes? Here's what you need to know about the e-cigarette. What is it? The e-cigarette is meant to mimic the experience of smoking a real one. It looks like a conventional cigarette, and is used in nearly the exact same way — less the fire and smoke. In fact, the experience is so true to traditional smoking that some consider it a viable cessation therapy. Full size Each e-cig is powered by a small lithium battery that atomizes a propylene glycol/nicotine solution. The substance that's being inhaled even looks like smoke, but it's a vapor similar to fog — albeit a nicotine drenched fog; the amount of nicotine it produces closely approximates what's found in a conventional cigarette.
